The Sydney Theatre Company established in 1978 has been the leading lady of theatre in the harbour city and entertained Sydneysiders for over 30 years. The company presents an annual twelve-play eclectic program and performs annually to audiences in excess of 300,000. The current artistic directors are Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett and husband Andrew Upton, an Australian playwright, screenwriter and director.

The renowned Sydney Theatre Company has presented productions by Complicite, Cheek by Jowl, Out-of-Joint, National Theatre of Great Britain and the Steppenwolf Theatre Company. The Sydney Theatre Company has launched the career of many internationally-celebrated actors such as Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush, Judy Davis, Hugo Weaving, Toni Collette, Rose Byrne, Miranda Otto and Mel Gibson.

As well as being the launch pad for many famous thespians and actors who later went on to have international fame, renowned directors such as Michael Blakemore, Max Stafford-Clark, Howard Davies, Declan Donnellan, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Liv Ullmann, Steven Soderbergh and Tamás Ascher have also worked at The Sydney Theatre Company. Luc Bondy will direct for the Company in 2011.
