The Archibald Prize exhibition is one of Australia’s oldest and prestigious art awards and began in 1921. It will be held at the Art Gallery of NSW on 23 March – 2 June 2013 and has attracted over 100 entries. The winner of the Archibald Prize exhibition receives $50,000 and awarded the most important portraiture prize in Australia.

In addition to the Archibald Prize, there are also the Wynne Prize and the Sulman Prize. The Wynne Prize for landscape painting or figure sculpture, $25,000 and the Sulman Prize for subject/genre painting and/or mural work, $20,000.

Another prize category for the Archibald Prize exhibition is the People’s Choice Award where votes are collated by the public. The award comes with a prize of $2,500. Another quirky award is the Packing Room Prize in which the staff who unpack the portraits vote for their favourite. This award comes with a prize of $1,000.

Artists who have won the Archibald Prize in the past included painters the calibre of Brett Whiteley, George Lambert and William Dobell. Previous famous subjects who have sat for the prize include Albert Namatjira, Banjo Paterson, Miranda Otto, Brendan Cowell, Gough Whitlam, John McEwan and Dorothy Hewitt, Tim Minchin, Kate Ceberano and Gulpilil.
